Common Parasites of Veterinary Importance

Baermann Technique

Method:

Suspend fresh faeces in gauze in a funnel
Clamp funnel tubing closed
Fill funnel with warm water until the faeces is covered
Stand overnight
Open clamp and collect a few mls of fluid
Centrifuge fluid to sediment any larvae
Place sediment under coverslip and observe microscopically

Result: (cat faeces)

Aelurostronglyus L1 - look for characteristic kink in tail
Strongyloides felis - larger genital primordium

Safety Precautions

Wear lab coat and disposable gloves
Wash hands thoroughly when finished

Cleaning Up Procedures

Dispose of all disposable equipment in clinical waste bin or sharps as appropriate
Rinse all glassware and spray with 70% enthanol before putting in wash up container
Ensure lab is clean and tidy
